The Black Room, The Black Garter, The Black Widow, The Black Masque & The Black Flame

by Lisette Ashton

Jo Valentine, private investigator, first appeared on page 23 of The Black Room, back in March of 1998. To date she has appeared in five adventures: The Black Room, The Black Garter, The Black Widow The Black Masque & The Black Flame.

The Black Room

The submissive trainees at the Pentagon Agency derive pleasure from even the most demeaning tasks. Their lives are dedicated to sexual servitude; they enjoy pain and humiliation on a daily basis. There is only one punishment they try to avoid: the black room.

When private investigator Jo Valentine is assigned to infiltrate the pentagon Agency, she is prepared to do anything to get results - but nothing can prepare her for what lies in the black room. The more she discovers about the agency, the more she learns of her passion for dark and bizarre sexual games that go beyond anything she has experienced before.

The Black Garter

Ruthess and beautiful, Hera leads the Black Garter with a merciless hand. Her elite group of prefects secretly patrols the Kilgrimol Finishing School for Young Ladies. They help her to administer cruel and degrading punishments whenever hera deems it necessary. New recruits are subjected to humiliating initiations, but the treasured prize of acceptance makes it a sacrifice worth enduring.

When a spate of scandals strikes the school, private investigator Jo Valentine is called in to find the source of these incidents. Finding herself drawn in to a world of perverse pleasures and sexual intrigue, she soon realises that the Kilgrimol Finishing School is no place for a lady.

Physical Education: A Review of THE BLACK GARTER by Lisette Ashton

Reviewed by the acclaimed erotic novelist: Lisabet Sarai

Everyone (well, everyone who reads erotica!) knows that girls' schools are hotbeds of illicit sexual activity. The neatly-pressed white blouses barely hide ripe young breasts that ache for a lascivious touch. Beneath the plaid uniform skirts, tight, virginal quims moisten and swell at the merest suggestion of fleshly activity. In the absence of male subjects, girls will eagerly turn to each other for amorous release.

Yes, non-coed education can be delightfully naughty. Lisette Ashton's Kilgrimol Finishing School for Young Ladies, though, sets a new standard for pedagogical perversity. At Kilgrimol, the courses in concupiscence are orchestrated by the Black Garter, a shadowy and potent secret society composed of senior students. The Black Garter jealously guards the reputation of Kilgrimol, punishing poor scholarship or lack of discipline, rewarding obedience and discretion.

Hera, the merciless and beautiful leader of the Black Garter, ruthlessly employs paddles, canes, candles, and dildoes to maintain the supremacy of both the school and the society. Physical pain is only one aspect of the punishments she inflicts; she understands that the humiliation of being forced to sexual service can be far more persuasive, when judiciously applied. Hera and her disciples enjoy the fruits of power, maintaining outward order without sacrificing their secret pleasures.

Despite Hera's influence, however, she is unable to determine who is betraying Kilgrimol, besmirching the exclusive school's good name by leaking sensational stories to the press. The same goal brings private investigator Jo Valentine onto the scene.

Gorgeous, tough, bisexual Jo can't afford to refuse the job pushed on her by a rich, bossy Kilgrimol parent. Once Jo's on the case, the sexual stew at the school comes to a rolling boil, assisted by an ambitious (and well-hung) reporter, a sleazy gym instructor, a studious red-head who's interested in taking on both Jo's profession and her body, and Hera's bevy of nubile lieutenants. The plot is not the only thing that thickens as Jo sneaks, spies, sucks and screws her way to the truth.

This is second of Ms. Ashton's novels to feature Jo Valentine. She's a memorable character, sharp-tongued, quick-witted and resourceful, but continually sidetracked by her hyperactive libido. I'd love to see her at work on a case with a bit more menace to it; when Jo confronts Hera in the final pages of the book, it's clear that Hera is, after all, just a precocious school girl.

On the other hand, this is not really a detective novel. THE BLACK GARTER is primarily about sex, in all its guises. It offers a wonderfully wide variety: BDSM, threesomes, foursomes, outdoor sex, anal sex, lesbian sex, voyeurism, masturbation -- in short, whatever might possibly turn you on. All of this erotic activity is described with a breathless enthusiasm that makes it clear that everyone, including each of Hera's victims, is having a rollicking good time. Despite the Black Garter's attempts to maintain a dangerous, threatening image, the group's ceremonies of initiation and retribution are more about pleasure than about pain.

There's no darkness in this book: no doubts, no guilt, no internal conflicts. THE BLACK GARTER is pure fantasy, where everyone experiences outrageous, ecstatic orgasms -- usually more than one! Nevertheless, Ms. Ashton usually manages to avoid cliches. Her characters, while hardly deep, are distinctive and appealing, and the book includes a number of original twists (including the final breathless rush to rescue an unfortunate prisoner of the Black Garter before she loses her virginity).

If you're seeking sexy, escapist fiction with a light BDSM emphasis, you'll enjoy THE BLACK GARTER. And if after you've finished, you want more of Jo (and who wouldn't?), check out Lisette Ashton's other Nexus titles: THE BLACK ROOM, THE BLACK WIDOW and THE BLACK MASQUE.

The trend in "literary" erotica these days is toward darkness, edginess, ambiguity, and lust so raw that it leaves your hands bloody. I read a lot of that. Sometimes, though, I just want old-fashioned, no-holds-barred naughtiness, some good dirty fun. If THE BLACK GARTER is any indication, that's Lisette Ashton's specialty.

The Black Widow

Spurned by her husband and cheated of her heritage, the Black Widow feels justified in seeking revenge. Determined to lay claim to Elysian Fields, a health farm with a unique doctrine of sensual pleasure and erotic stimulation, the Black Widow wants what is rightfully hers. Indulging a newfound passion for sexual domination, she is only too pleased to deal with those that get in her way. Punishments are cruel and explicit as she forces subordinates to do her bidding. Only the brave dare beg for mercy and their cries invariably go unheeded.

Caught in the middle of this hostile takeover, Jo Valentine finds herself entangled in the Black Widow's web.

The Black Masque

The ceremonies of the black masque are magnificent events steeped in an erotic blend of vampire myth and fantasy. The depravity of these rituals is boundless and each rite culminates in orgiastic excess. As they prepare to enact their greatest ceremony to date pasions run high among the perverse members. Eager virgins are prepared and the sacrifical altar is readied as the masque anticipates its finest night. Unwittingly entangled in the twisted ceremony, private investigator, Jo Valentine is drawn into their dark world of pleasure and pain - and none of her previous adventures have prepared Jo for for her unearthly encounter with the black masque.

The Black Flame

For private investigator Jo Valentine it is a surveilance operation unlike any other: a coven of witches practising orgiastic pagan rituals; a sadistic preacher intent on extracting penance from every nubile sinner who falls beneath his cane; and an ongoing feud with her submissive partner.

Caught in the midst of this volatile situation, alone, bound and helpless, Jo is subjected to a dark revelation in the pleasure of pain. Tied, teased and tormented, she is immersed in so many sexual excesses that it borders on being a religious experience.
